Astana State Philharmonic Chamber Choir won a gold medal of the XI China International Choir Festival, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Kazakhstanskaya Pravda. This prestigious music festival is held in Beijing every other year. 134 choirs from 66 countries came to China this summer. Different choirs - professional and amateur, men’s, women’s, students’ and children’s choirs - took part in the competition. Kazakhstan's singers were declared the best in the Professional Mixed Choir category. According to Yerzhan Dautov, Art Director of the Chamber Choir, their rivals at the Chinese Festival were tough to compete against and this new award once again confirmed the high level of Kazakhstan's choir schools. “The Chinese are very apt for music and very emotional people,” the director said. “They reacted very emotionally even when we were warming up before the performances. They took a lot of photos of our musicians. And we had a chance to get to know Chinese culture closely. We went sightseeing and visited the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.” Kazakhstanskaya Pravda also reports that our choir sang Kazakhstan's anthem standing on the Great Wall of China and received an ovation. Then they sang a Kazakh national song called Karatorgay as an encore.
