Kazakhstan and Russian Defense Ministries mull to sign an agreement establishing the Joint Regional Air Defense System next year, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov. “We approached the chairmanship in the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) with a certain agenda and 5 directions aimed on pin-point enhancement of security elements and predictability in CSTO space with a special focus on Central Asian region. I believe that we have advanced on all 5 priority areas and Kazakhstan’s chairmanship was successful,” Idrissov said. According to him, Kazakhstan’s initiatives were reflected in Kyrgyzstan’s list for priorities for its chairmanship in the CSTO in 2013. “In particular, we have seriously moved forward in uniting our air defense systems. Coordination of Russian-Kazakhstan agreement on creation of the Joint Regional Air Defense System has also been completed. I think that the document may be signed by the military authorities of both countries next year,” Minister said. He stressed that other Central Asian CSTO member-countries will be able to join this agreement “establishing the Joint Air Defense System in the Central Asian region”. “Military authorities of our countries are working in this direction,” Idrissov added. Information exchange in cyber-security sector was established between the Organization’s members during Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in CSTO. “It is clear that this problem cannot be solved in one year, but we have included it into the agenda of our Organization and have started actively working in this direction,” Foreign Minister stressed. Besides, military structures of CSTO countries performed some work to enhance the Collective Operative Response Forces in 2012.
