Qatar to utilize Kazakhstan's military ranges

During the discussion of the bill regarding military cooperation between the two nations, Deputy Bakytzhan Bazarbek raised a question about the use of military ranges by both countries. He inquired if the agreement would allow Qatar and Kazakhstan to utilize each other's military training grounds.
According to Article 5 of the agreement, both nations will have the option to use each other's military ranges.
"Kazakhstan has many military ranges, but Qatar does not have any, only a military base. What military ranges are available in Qatar? Their armed forces consist of 80% foreign personnel. How will this resonate with the CSTO agreement?" Bazarbek questioned.
In response, Deputy Minister of Defense Darkhan Akhmediev clarified that Kazakhstan does not currently plan to utilize Qatar's military ranges.
"Our goal is not to use their range; rather, Qatari forces may use our ranges. That opportunity will be provided. Regarding the second question, there will be no contradictions. As previously mentioned, we have signed similar agreements with 20 countries, so this issue will not arise," he stated.
Bazarbek advised the official to closely review the document, highlighting that it indicates mutual access to military ranges.
"Yes, that's correct. I emphasize that we have no plans to use Qatar's range in the near future; instead, we will provide our range to them. Regarding modernization and restoration of the range, funding will be allocated," Akhmediev confirmed.
Under the agreement, Kazakhstan and Qatar will collaborate in various areas, including:
- Military education and training
- Military medicine
- Military science
- Cultural and sporting events in the military sector
- Consultations on peacekeeping operations
- Combat training
After the discussion, the Mazhilis deputies voted in favor of ratifying the agreement.
