The third regional meeting of heads of near-border authorities of Central Asian CIS countries is held in Astana, Tengrinews.kz reports from the meeting. According to the Near-Border Service of Kazakhstan National Security Commission, the meeting’s objective lays in analyzing the situation at the Central Asian part of the CIS external border and working out joint measures for countering new challenges and threats, prevention of penetration of terrorists, weapons, ammunition, drugs, illegal migrants and money through the borders of CIS member-countries, as well as rendering mutual practical aide in ensuring border security of the region's countries. “Growing threats to stability in the region predetermine the necessity of further consolidation of joint efforts. We are concerned about remaining activities of terrorist and extremist organizations in the region, especially prior to NATO troops withdrawal from Afghanistan. The activities of the terrorist organizations are directly linked with drug trafficking. Let’s face it, we are able seize just a small part of Afghan opiates trafficked through our borders. In this relation we have to work out a clear strategy of joint actions to adequately respond to the regional security threat. We believe it necessary to expand practices of joint operations on detection and suppression of the international drug channels. It is important to take practical steps aimed at enhancing protection of external borders. It is practical to develop a positive cooperation experience in personnel training,” chairman of Kazakhstan National Security Commission Nurtai Abykayev said opening the meeting. The meeting will complete with signing of the protocol to be reviewed at the 69th meeting of the Border Troops Commanders. Regional meetings are held in line with the action plan on implementation of the concept of approved border policy of CIS member-countries for 2011-2015, as well as to implement the protocol On approval of the provision on organization of interaction of border and other authorities of CIS member-countries in rendering aide in case of emergence and settlement of crisis situations at the external borders. The first regional meeting was held on March 18-19, 2011, in Bishkek and the second was hosted by Dushanbe on February 28, 2012. By Altynai Zhumzhumina
