This year’s grain harvest is twice lower than that of 2011, a Tengrinews.kz journalist reports, citing the country’s Vice Minister of Agriculture Muslim Umiryayev. “Due to the inclement weather, we only harvested 14.8 million tons of grain, 2.2fold less than last year”, he elaborated. According to the Vice Minister, all the grain in the total of 15.1 million hectares had been harvested by November 10. The gross weight of grain after primary processing stands at 12.3 million tons. 9.8 million tons of grain left out of last year’s harvest plus the current year’s volume are enough to meet the internal demand and export about 8 million tons, he said. He also elaborated that Kazakhstan had harvested 385 000 tons of cotton, 2 700 000 tons of vegetables, 1.5 million tons of melons and gourds; 3 million tons of potatoes. Harvest of oil-bearing plants is estimated at 850 000 tons; and the figure for sugar beetroots stands at 230 000 tons. “All this is enough to meet the domestic demand”, he summed up. “As compared to last year’s harvest, the total of oil-bearing plants is 25% down; the cotton harvest is 15% up”, the Vice Minister elaborated.
