Zhambyl Oblast plans on increasing the volume of agricultural production, Tengrinews reports citing the head of the region Karim Kokrekbayev, who spoke at a briefing organized by the Central Communication Services on 10 October.
"Thanks to the measures taken, by 2020 the region's meat production will increase by 40 percent and reach 82 thousand tons, the volume of milk produced will grow by 20% and reach 325 thousand tons. (...) In general, the volume of agricultural produce is expected to double by 2020, that is to reach 245 billion tenge ($1.35 billion)," the Akim (Governor) said.
Zhambyl Oblast is a region is Kazakhstan's south that is intense on industry and agriculture. In seven out of its ten districts the agricultural sector is prevailing, which makes sucessful agriculture crucially important for the entire Oblast.
Nearly 10.5 thousand hectares of the total 14.4 thousand hectares of land in the Oblast is agricultural land. The primary crops grown in the region are wheat, barley and maize. In addition, vegetables, oilseeds, potatoes, pumpkin, fruits and berries are grown there as well. Animal breeding is also quite extensive due to rich native grassland fields. Cattle, sheep, horse and poultry are all present.
In 2013, the total agricultural production reached 127 billion tenge ($702 million), of which planting industry accounted for 63 billion ($348 million) and animal husbandry for 64 billion ($354 million), according to the Department of Statistics of the Ministry of National Economy of Kazakhstan.
Kokrekbayev said that additional efforts in the coming years would be directed at attracting investment in the agricultural sector. "So, investments will be attracted from Malaysia, Hungary for cattle breeding and to create 83 mini dairy product farms along the "Western Europe-Western China” highway. Moreover, we are planning to open 145 milk collection points," he informed.
Plant growing will be developed in three main directions. "First, to increase the area of irrigated land by 40 percent by 2020. Second, [to increase] 6.5 times the area with moisture saving technologies. Third, [to increase] 5.6 times the area of drip irrigation and bring it to 25.6 thousand hectares," the Akim declared.
He also said that there were plans to establish a horticultural cluster in Shu district. "As a result, the volume of crop production by 2020 will double," Kokrekbayev said.
The Mayor also spoke about the water dependency of the region on Kazakhstan's neighbors. He noted that to address the problem of water shortages four small reservoirs would be built and five other water facilities would undergo reconstruction worth 25 billion tenge ($138 million) in 2015-2018.
"At the same time, to accelerate the development of agriculture of the region the government of Kazakhstan suggested assistance in moving the schedule of onstruction of three of these small reservoirs and reconstruction of two reservoirs totally worth 14.8 billion tenge ($81.8 million) to 2015-2016," he added.
