Kazakhstan’s revenues for grain exports in 2013 exceeded $1 billion, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Nurbek Dairbekov, Managing Director of ProdKorporatsiya National Company [regulating grain exports], as saying.

“For the recent 4 years the revenues have grown almost 2.5 times. The overall 2013 revenues made up $1.2 billion, whereas back in 2009 the figure only stood at $600 million”, he told a briefing at the President’s Center for Mass Communication.

He reminded that the gross grain harvest in 2013 made up 18.2 million tons, including 13.9 million tons of wheat. “This makes a good export potential. According to the Agriculture Ministry’s estimates, this year’s export potential stands at 9.5 million tons”, he said.

In the 2013-2014 marketing year Kazakhstan exported a total of 7.3 million tons of grain.

“In the recent years Kazakhstan has been diversifying its grain export routes. With a new railway link in place connecting the West of Kazakhstan to Iran through Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan can substantially boost grain exports to Iran. This year we plan to ship 14% of all Kazakhstan’s grain to Iran. China will be responsible for 4% of grain exports. It is a substantial increase, as back in 2009-2013 Kazakhstan only exported 1% of its grain to China”, Mr. Dairbekov elaborated.

According to him, Iran has been a traditional importer of Kazakhstan grain, with annual imports standing at 300 000 – 500 000 tons of wheat, with the figure to be brought up to 1.2 million tons this year.
“We are considering a variety of cooperation forms with Iran, not only direct supplies, but also swap operations. When it comes to cooperation with China, grain exports are expected to reach 370 000 tons this year, a nearly twofold increase as compared to other marketing years”, he said.

According to him, back in 2000 Russia nearly gave up on importing Kazakhstan’s grain. However, the figure has been growing in the last couple of years: “in the 2009-2010 marketing year the grain imports to Russia made up 100 000 tons; now, with the Customs Union of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus in place, the figure has exceeded 1 million tons”.
