Kazakhstan has harvested 12 million tons of grain, a Tengrinews.kz journalist reported from a Government’s sitting October 16. “As of today, harvesting is complete in 99.7% of the area under crops, which makes up 15 million hectares. The total gross weight of grain stands at 14 million tons, with the average yield making up 9.6 metric centres per hectare. There are 52 000 hectares left. The grain weight is estimated to make up 12 million tons after processing”, Agriculture Ministry Executive Secretary Evgenyi Aman said. According to the Head of the Kazakhstan’s Grain Union Nurlan Tleubayev, in the 2012-2013 marketing year Kazakhstan will export 6.5-7 million tons of grain. “About 4.5 million tons of grain and about 1.8 million tons of flour (…) Altogether, it will make up 6.5-7 million tons”, he said. He elaborated that this marketing year is comparable to the 2010-2011 marketing year. And he specified that major importers of Kazakh grain would be Central Asian states and Iran. Agriculture Ministry Executive Secretary Evgenyi Aman said that KazAgro National Company is working to prolong the pay-off periods for loans taken by farmers who have been severely hit by this year’s drought and is paying out compensation for those who insured their harvest against inclement weather conditions. The total area hit by the drought makes up over 1 million hectares. Tengrinews.kz reported earlier that in the 2011-2012 Kazakhstan had exported over 12.7 million tons of grain, including grain equivalent of flour, 2.5 fold more than in the 2010-2011 marketing year. According to the State Agency for Statistics, grain production in Kazakhstan in 2011 totaled 26.9 million tons (net weight), with exports potential standing at 15 million tons.
