On his official visit to Germany Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev told German businessmen that the Customs Union of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus is not a new version of the USSR, a Tengrinews.kz journalist reported from Berlin. “We see some journalists writing that we are once again gathering a USSR (…) Revival of the USSR would call for the Communist party, a single ideology, state planning and all the other attributes of the Soviet regime. It is impossible. It is an economic integration. Removal of the customs barriers is beneficial for the member states”, President Nazarbayev said. “I am confident that integration within Eurasia is an effective way to counteract new challenges and threats. Eurasia is a concentration of half of global products. Integration of Europe and Asia is a matter of time. It is set to happen. This is something required for further economic development and wellbeing of the nations living in Eurasia. Fragmentariness of the Eurasian space does not allow to effectively unleash the potential of interaction. It reduces resistance of regional economies to global threats. It is of paramount importance to expand business and culture ties, develop transport infrastructure, and encourage trade and investments, energy partnership”, he said. In his closing remarks, President Nazarbayev added “bear in mind that 800 000 of Kazakhstan-born ethnic Germans live now in Germany, whereas another 400 000 still live in Kazakhstan. They are a good bridge for us to interact”.
