Less than half of wheat in good condition: Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture09 august 2014, 12:45
The Ministry of Agriculture has reported on the quality of cereal crops and yields in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports.
“As of August 7, 49.3% (7.5 milion hectares) of crops are in an excellent condition, 44.3% (6.8 million hectares) are in a satisfactory condition, 5% (0.8 million hectares) are in a bad condition, and the remaining 0.8% (0.1 million hectares) died,” the Ministry said.
For comparison, in 2013 64.8% of cereal crops were in an excellent condition while 30.8% were of a satisfactory condition. That year, only 0.3% of crops died.
All in all, the Ministry views this year's situation as normal.
759 thousand tons of cereals has already been harvested from 654.8 thousand hectares in Almaty, Zhambyl, Western Kazakhstan, Kyzylorda and South Kazakhstan Oblasts. The average yield is at 1160 kg per one hectare of land. This is 490 kg per one hectare less than last year.
“Zhambyl Oblast has the lowest yield (810 kg per one hectare) because of the drought during the time when the crops were supposed to growth,” the Ministry explained.
