Kazakhstan plans to annually boost uranium extraction to retain the global leader’s positions, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports.

Estimated 2013 uranium production will reach 22 821 tons, with the figure growing to 24 019 in 2014, 24 754 in 2015 and 25 602 in 2016. These are the projected indicators in accordance with the Kazakhstan’s Agency for Nuclear Power as they are outlined in the 2012-2016 strategic plan.

According to the document, global uranium explored reserves stand at over 3.5 million tons, with 96% of them being concentrated in 11 countries. The most of explored reserves (989 000 tons) are concentrated in Australia.

Meanwhile only 7 countries provide 87% of all the uranium extracted, with Canada and Australia extracting half of globally supplied uranium.

Tengrinews.kz reported earlier, citing KazAtomProm’s Press Service, that Kazakhstan retains its title of the uranium production leader as it supplies about 37% of uranium to global markets. The global market’s capacity is estimated at 55 700 tons. The uranium production output in Kazakhstan made up 20 900 tons in 2012. In 2011 the country’s share in global uranium supplies stood at 35%.

KazAtomProm, including its stakes in other companies, produced a total of 11 900 tons in 2012 (over 20% of global production). In 2011 the Company produced 11 079 tons.
