Almaty is the most “alluring city” in Kazakhstan and number 7 of the Top 10 cities to visit in 2014 according to The Rough Guide, Tengrinews reports.

The Top 10 includes Rio de Janeiro (1), Sarajevo (2), Umea (4), Lvov (5) and Marselle (6). Kazakhstan’s Almaty (7) is followed by Rotterdam, Glasgow and Portland. This makes Almaty the only Asian city in the 2014 top 10 cities to visit according to The Rough Guide.

According to the British website, Almaty may no longer be the capital (Kazakhstan moved its capital to Astana in 1997), but it remains the most “alluring city” in Kazakhstan. “Its setting along the old Silk Road, with rippling mountains all around, is as exotic as they come. Add this to the recent economic boom, which has seen luxury brands pumping millions into new developments, and Borat-style stereotypes disintegrate completely,” said The Rough Guide. Despite the failure to win the bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, the city has many modern ski resorts bustling with winter sports fans.

Population-wise, Almaty is the biggest city in Kazakhstan with, officially, 1.5 million people living in the "city of Apples". Nested in the foothill of Zailiysky Alatau, the city was once famous for its apple orchards (back in the Soviet era). The orchards are no more, but the city is regaining popularity for the beauty of its nature.
