Kazakhstan Majilis (lower chamber of the Parliament) ratified the agreement on transit of military property to Afghanistan via Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports. On February 8 Majilis deputies approved the draft law On ratification of the Agreement between the Governments of Kazakhstan and Spain to ensure transit of military equipment and personnel across the territory of Kazakhstan in relation to participation of Spanish military forces in the effort to stabilize and restore Afghanistan. The Agreement on ensuring transit of military equipment and personnel through the territory of Kazakhstan was adopted in July 2009 in Astana. This document defines the order of transit of military property and personnel through the territory of Kazakhstan by Spanish aircrafts involved in international effort to stabilize and restore Afghanistan. Transit of aircrafts via Kazakhstan is based on special permit issued in line with Kazakhstan’s legislation. “In general, of course, this is a message of our good will, support to the international forces ensuring security in Afghanistan. You know that this complies with our national interests, as everything that happens in Afghanistan is very important for Kazakhstan,” Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Kairat Omarov noted during presentation of the draft law. According to the law, Kazakhstan party issues a special permit with a special number allowing the transit flights. The permit is reissued every year. Spanish party provides a notification of its intention to use Kazakhstan’s air space at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled flights by sending the flight plan and flight details to Kazakhstan’s main air traffic planning center.
