The Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan is looking to prohibit E912 food additive that makes fruits look shinier and keeps them fresh longer, Tengrinews reports citing Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The draft amendments to the Customs Union technical regulations on safety of food additives, flavorings, and processing additives was published on September 23, 2014.

E912 is used worldwide to prevent moisture and weight loss of fruits during transportation. In addition with E912 fruits no longer attract insects.

E912 food additive is allowed in Russia. According to the technical regulations of the Customs Union, it is allowed to use on fresh citrus, melons, mango, papaya, avocado, pineapple and apples.

Experts believe it is just a formality, because local producers no longer use it. Instead, they process fruits with methylcyclopropene, a synthetic plant growth regulator that slows down the ripening of fruit and helps maintain their freshness.
