Tengrinews.kz - The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has confirmed a rise in the wolf population in Kazakhstan.

As per the ministry's data, there has been a slight increase in the number of wolves, from 13,819 in 2022 to 15,181 in 2023.

The ministry also addressed the issue of culling wolves and bears.

"In accordance with Article 29 and Article 45 of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan 'On the Protection, Reproduction, and Use of Wildlife,' the limit on the removal of wildlife species is determined based on biological justifications, prepared using population monitoring materials, habitat studies, and scientific research, and approved by the authorized body. Regulation of wildlife populations is conducted based on biological justification," stated the ministry.

For 2023, the quota for the removal of brown bears (excluding Tien Shan bears) is set at 124 individuals, while the quota for regulating the wolf population is set at 4,383 individuals.

For 2024, the quota for the removal of brown bears (excluding Tien Shan bears) will be 176 individuals, and the wolf regulation quota will increase to 5,947 individuals. Should the populations of bears and wolves continue to grow, the limits on their culling may be raised based on scientific recommendations.
