Tengrinews.kz — What happens to a banknote if you accidentally wash it with your clothes, get it soaked in the rain, or carry it in your wallet for a long time? The National Bank of Kazakhstan has revealed the rigorous testing money undergoes before entering circulation.
Each bill is subjected to a series of tests.
One stage involves soil resistance testing.
To conduct these tests, specialists use a custom mixture that simulates the dirt and grime accumulated during everyday use.
Before testing, experts determine the paper's baseline characteristics. They then place the samples into a specialized machine that replicates real-world handling conditions. Once the process is complete, they re-measure and evaluate the results.
"Even if you accidentally leave a banknote in your pocket and put it through the washing machine, it won't come as a surprise to us—this scenario is already accounted for in our testing. During these trials, samples are exposed to water, detergents, mechanical friction, and temperatures similar to household conditions," the National Bank stated.
Following the tests, specialists verify whether the banknotes have retained their physical properties and security features.

Furthermore, banknotes are tested for durability, flexibility, and wear resistance. The National Bank noted that such trials allow for the implementation of modern technologies and the issuance of currency that maintains its integrity and high level of security longer while in circulation.
Although modern banknotes undergo extensive testing, they should still be handled with care. It is recommended not to excessively fold, tear, or write on bills, or store them in damp environments. Careful handling helps extend the lifespan of the banknotes and preserve their security features.
