Tengrinews.kz – Authorities have promised to restore the historic building of the former railway hospital in Almaty by 2026, citing 24.kz.

The site, better known as the "Turksib hospital," is located in the city center at the intersection of Abay Avenue and Masanchi Street. The building has been abandoned for several years.

Until recently, the "Turksib hospital" was considered one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Almaty. Its construction began right after World War II, in 1948, based on a design by Soviet architect Ivan Kudryavtsev. With its columns, arches, stucco moldings, and national-style ornaments, the building has always been an integral part of the old city's unique appearance.

In 2018, the complex of former medical center buildings was transferred to private trust management. Shortly before that, investors had already begun investing in renovations. However, that same year, the site was added to the preliminary list of architectural monuments, leading to a halt in construction work.

The hospital building is currently almost unguarded. It is enclosed only by a thin metal fence, which is easy to overcome. Teenagers and homeless individuals are frequently seen on the premises.

Deputy Head of the City Construction Department, Daulet Yelamanov, claims that the restoration of the historic site will begin very soon.

"As of today, the construction department has uploaded the design and cost estimate documentation to the state expertise portal. The project is currently undergoing state review. The preliminary timeline for obtaining approval is April of this year. We plan to start construction and installation work in May," stated Daulet Yelamanov, Deputy Head of the Almaty Construction Department.

The reconstruction of the building will take approximately 13 months, with a planned budget of six billion tenge. The former hospital will be converted into a city children's rehabilitation center for patients with musculoskeletal disorders, cerebral palsy, speech pathologies, and other conditions. The center will have a capacity of 250 visits per shift. Since the site is an architectural monument, it will be restored to its original appearance.
