Tengrinews.kz - The water volume of the Aral Sea has increased in the northern part. This was reported by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
According to the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, following the first phase of the North Aral Sea conservation project, the water volume in the sea has increased by 42 percent, reaching 27 billion cubic meters. The salinity of the water has decreased almost fourfold, and the annual fish catch has risen to 8,000 tons.
It is worth noting that in 2024, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation sent about 2.6 billion cubic meters of water to the Aral Sea. During the irrigation season, a record volume of 1 billion cubic meters of water was sent. This was made possible through the efficient distribution and conservation of water from the Syr Darya River. For comparison, in 2022, only 816 million cubic meters of water were sent to the Aral Sea.
"These figures are the result of work over the last two years. We have reached mutual understanding with our neighbors on water conservation and fair distribution of water resources. We will continue negotiations and work on maintaining stable reservoir levels. The Aral restoration project is aimed at improving ecology, developing the fishing industry and tourism, and enhancing the welfare of the population," said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
It was reported in October 2024 that the total water volume of the Aral Sea reached 22 billion cubic meters.
