Tengrinews.kz — President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has received a letter from UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany, citing the Akorda press service.

Details

In the letter, he thanked the President for the congratulations on his election to the high post and reaffirmed his commitment to the organization’s key priorities in education, science, culture, and information. Khaled El-Enany also expressed readiness to continue close cooperation with Kazakhstan.

“In conclusion, the Director-General confirmed his readiness to continue close cooperation with Kazakhstan in promoting shared values,” the statement said.

Context

On November 6, UNESCO’s General Conference elected Khaled El-Enany as the new Director-General - he received 172 votes out of 179.

Background

UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes peace and security through international cooperation in education, science, culture, communication, and information.

Khaled El-Enany is an Egyptologist, a professor at Helwan University, and a former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt. He headed the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

He became UNESCO’s 12th Director-General and the first from an Arab country. He took office on November 15, succeeding Audrey Azoulay, who led the organization from 2017.
