Tokayev received proposals on Kazakhstan joining BRICS

- A BRICS summit will be held in Kazan on October 23-24. We understand that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been invited to this forum as a guest of Vladimir Putin, who currently presides over the organization.
- The President's schedule includes participation in the BRICS summit. He plans to deliver a speech at the extended session of the organization on October 24 in the outreach format.
- Azerbaijan, Belarus, and possibly other CIS countries have already applied to join BRICS. What are Kazakhstan's aspirations regarding BRICS? Does our country plan to join this international organization?
- Kazakhstan is closely monitoring the evolution of BRICS and supports the calls of the founding states' leaders to strive for a just, democratic world order, free from the hegemony of any superpowers.
The President has received proposals for Kazakhstan to join BRICS, as the country is recognized as a responsible and authoritative member of the international community.
These proposals are being carefully considered by the Head of State, and relevant agencies are analyzing them based on Kazakhstan's national interests.
However, at present and likely in the foreseeable future, Kazakhstan will refrain from applying for BRICS membership, taking into account the multi-step process involved in considering membership, as well as other factors related to the organization's development prospects.
- In that case, which organization will be prioritized by Kazakh diplomacy?
- The President has repeatedly expressed support for the UN as a universal and irreplaceable organization where all current international issues, including the construction of a just world order, can and should be discussed.
- But there is an opinion that the UN has outlived its usefulness.
- According to the President, the UN is not without its flaws, but there is no other organization like it, and therefore it needs the support of the global community.
The UN Charter should serve as the foundation of international law, and no one has the right to violate the principles laid down in this fundamental document.
The President has already expressed regret over the UN Security Council's inability to make important and fateful decisions. Therefore, he believes it is necessary to begin reforming the Security Council based on extensive consultations among UN member states, taking into account the interests of "middle powers."
Note: BRICS is an association of nine countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia. The organization was founded in June 2006.
