Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev outlined the key areas for future economic and investment cooperation between Kazakhstan and the United States, according to the Akorda press service.

He made this statement on Monday, September 22, while speaking at a roundtable meeting with representatives of American businesses in New York.

President Tokayev named the energy sector as the first priority, describing it as the cornerstone of bilateral cooperation over the past decades.

“We acknowledge and highly value the major and successful investments of Chevron and ExxonMobil over the last 30 years. Despite all geopolitical disruptions in the region, their presence in our country has never been questioned,” Tokayev said.

He emphasized that the operations of these companies have played a positive role in modernizing Kazakhstan’s economy, introducing advanced technologies, and boosting its resilience and capacity.

“We remain committed to constructive cooperation with our U.S. partners at the Tengiz, Kashagan, and Karachaganak oil fields, and aim to ensure that this partnership continues to deliver fair and mutually beneficial results. Kazakhstan is also focused on diversifying its energy export routes,” he stated.

Tokayev also pointed out that Kazakhstan supplies about 40% of global uranium demand, and roughly 24% of U.S. uranium imports come from the country. He underlined the strategic importance of involving American energy companies in this area.

He called for exploring new opportunities in geological exploration, expanding current projects, and boosting uranium mining and processing.

Additionally, aligning with U.S. energy priorities, Kazakhstan is working to promote clean, efficient, and environmentally safe energy solutions based on coal, which still accounts for over 70% of the country’s electricity generation.

“With some of the largest coal reserves in the world, we share the U.S. view of coal as a reliable and secure energy source, at least in the foreseeable future. Our energy strategy is built on four pillars: oil, gas, coal, and uranium. And we intend to firmly stick to this principle,” Tokayev added.

As the second major priority, Tokayev identified critical raw materials.

He reminded the audience that Kazakhstan holds substantial reserves of copper, tungsten, lead, zinc, lithium, graphite, and other minerals that are increasingly important to high-tech industries.

“We have successfully created an investor-friendly jurisdiction in the mining sector, supported by transparent and comprehensive legislation. Kazakhstan’s mining sector has already attracted major companies like Ivanhoe, Rio Tinto, Anglo Teck, and Fortescue,” the President stated.

Tokayev also highlighted transport and logistics as a sector with wide-ranging opportunities. In his view, the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) opens up major prospects.

“We highly value the key role of Wabtec in advancing our engineering and railway sectors. In partnership with this company, Kazakhstan is building not only physical infrastructure, but also intelligent and integrated transport corridors powered by data,” he explained.

The $4 billion agreement signed with Wabtec on Monday will significantly strengthen U.S.–Kazakhstan cooperation in transport, Tokayev noted.

Kazakhstan’s flagship carriers Air Astana and SCAT actively operate Boeing aircraft, which form the backbone of the country's civil aviation fleet.

“We are working to expand our cooperation with Boeing and hope to receive additional new aircraft in the coming years,” Tokayev added.
