Tengrinews.kz — President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received Yasutoshi Nishimura, Chairman of the Japanese Parliamentary Friendship League with Kazakhstan, citing Akorda.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Yasutoshi Nishimura on his appointment as Chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship League with Kazakhstan. During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state and prospects for deepening interstate cooperation and strengthening interparliamentary ties.
The Head of State emphasized that Japan is one of Kazakhstan’s key partners in Asia.
The President drew attention to the implementation of the agreements reached following his official visit to Tokyo last year, as well as to the significant opportunities in the trade, economic, and investment spheres.
“We attach special importance to deepening our expanded strategic partnership with Tokyo. Last year, I paid an official visit to Japan, the results of which brought Kazakh-Japanese relations to a new level. During the visit, the esteemed Ms. Sanae Takaichi and I signed a joint statement covering all areas of bilateral relations. In the course of the trip, 17 important interdepartmental documents were approved in the fields of trade, science and education, digitalization, ecology, and agriculture. Representatives of the business communities of the two countries signed more than 60 agreements worth a total of 3.7 billion dollars. In Tokyo, we successfully held the first Central Asia–Japan Dialogue Summit. This large-scale meeting undoubtedly contributed to strengthening interregional ties,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
The Head of State recalled that the next summit of the leaders of Central Asia and Japan will take place in Astana next year. According to him, preparations for this event have already begun.
The interlocutors also discussed cultural and humanitarian ties.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted the growing interest in Japanese culture and traditional sports such as sumo and judo in Kazakhstan, mentioning the success of Kazakh sumo wrestler Yersin Baltagul (Kinbozan Haruki).
Yasutoshi Nishimura thanked the President for the opportunity to meet and confirmed the Japanese parliament’s readiness to expand multifaceted cooperation with Kazakhstan.
The President also awarded Yasutoshi Nishimura the Order of Dostyk, First Class, for his major contribution to strengthening and developing cooperation, as well as interparliamentary ties, between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Japan.
As a reminder, in December 2025 Kassym-Jomart Tokayev paid an official visit to Japan. The President of Kazakhstan held talks with Emperor Naruhito of Japan and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The countries signed 14 intergovernmental and interdepartmental documents.
