Tengrinews.kz — President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held talks in Tokyo with the heads of major Japanese companies, citing Akorda.

The Head of State met with Shingo Ueno, head of one of Japan’s largest and most influential trade and investment corporations, Sumitomo. The President noted that Kazakhstan highly values Sumitomo’s commitment to sustainable growth and responsible business practices, and regards the company as a long-term strategic partner.

Nuclear medicine project with Sumitomo

Shingo Ueno informed the Head of State about preparations for a joint project with the national company Kazatomprom in the field of nuclear medicine. The project aims to develop scientifically grounded approaches to producing medical radioisotopes from products of uranium production.

The interlocutors also discussed prospects for implementing joint investment projects in transport and logistics, energy, the nuclear industry, metallurgy, and geological exploration.

Prospects for cooperation with JOGMEC

Later, the Head of State received Ichiro Takahara, Chairman of the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).

During the meeting, the parties discussed prospects for expanding cooperation in geological exploration, the extraction and processing of critical minerals, and the sustainable management of natural resources.

Background: JOGMEC is a key Japanese state institution responsible for the country’s energy and mineral resource security. It functions as a state operator to ensure stable supplies of oil, gas, hydrogen, ammonia, and rare-earth metals.

The President noted JOGMEC’s strong interest in implementing projects in Kazakhstan.

They also considered expanding the organization’s participation in geological exploration projects in Kazakhstan, including opening a representative office. Tokayev believes this would enable more effective coordination of joint projects and encourage active participation of Japanese industrial and technology companies in the Kazakh market.

Joint projects with Mitsui

The President of Kazakhstan also met with Tatsuo Yasunaga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mitsui.

The Head of State thanked Mitsui’s leadership for its active work in Kazakhstan and its contribution to strengthening economic cooperation with Japan. The company currently plays an important role in shaping international supply chains and developing infrastructure, energy, and industry.

The President stated that Kazakhstan is interested in expanding Mitsui’s presence in key sectors of the country’s economy. In particular, he endorsed the company’s plans to take part in the construction of a production complex in Astana for major repairs and refurbishment of equipment.

Areas of mutual interest also include critical minerals, transport and logistics, and the introduction of technologies aimed at preventing natural disasters.

As part of the President of Kazakhstan’s visit to Tokyo, the signing of memorandums on the implementation of a number of joint projects with Mitsui in Kazakhstan is planned.

Komatsu project in Astana

During the Head of State’s conversation with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Komatsu, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that Komatsu is a reliable, time-tested partner of Kazakhstan, making a significant contribution to the development of the country’s mining infrastructure.

Background: Komatsu is one of the world’s largest engineering corporations, specializing in the production of construction, mining, road, and industrial equipment.

The President welcomed the company’s decision to implement a project to build a production complex in Astana for the major repair and restoration of machinery.

According to Komatsu President Hiroyuki Ogawa, Central Asia is a strategically important market with high potential and significant opportunities. He said the new complex will become the largest hub in the region, reducing the time and cost of repairing components for mining companies and ensuring prompt service.

The Head of State stressed that Kazakhstan is interested in localizing production and further strengthening industrial cooperation between the two countries, as well as in obtaining advanced technologies to improve the competitiveness of the national economy.

Special attention during the meeting was paid to workforce training. Tokayev supported Komatsu’s initiative to establish a regional training center in Kazakhstan for operators, mechanics, and engineers, noting that this project will be an important contribution to human capital development and to deepening industrial partnership.

Hitachi expands projects in Kazakhstan

Tokayev also received Masafumi Senzaki, President of Hitachi Construction Machinery. During the meeting, the parties discussed prospects for expanding cooperation between Kazakhstan’s mining enterprises and the Japanese company.

Background: Hitachi Construction Machinery is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction and mining equipment. The company’s excavators, mining dump trucks, and other machinery are used in more than 150 countries, including at major deposits in Kazakhstan.

The Head of State emphasized that Kazakhstan, as a key regional partner of Hitachi Construction Machinery, is ready to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. In the President’s view, it is important to focus further efforts on localizing production and repairing equipment used in mining development.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev believes that promising areas for joint work may also include digitalization, the adoption of green technologies, and autonomous transport systems.

Masafumi Senzaki said that the development and application of high-tech, low-carbon, and safe solutions is one of HCM’s priority goals, both globally and as part of its projects in Kazakhstan.
