Tengrinews.kz - President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took part in the Eurasian Economic Forum, which began on Thursday, June 26, in Minsk.
According to the Akorda press service, the Head of State spoke at the plenary session of the forum, titled "Strategy of Eurasian Economic Integration: Results and Prospects."
Tokayev emphasized the significance of the forum as a meaningful platform for dialogue on key issues of the integration bloc.
“Today, as it enters a new stage of development, the Union rightfully holds the position of one of the largest associations in Eurasia, with a combined economic potential of $2.6 trillion.
Last year, mutual trade volume hit another record of $98 billion—almost double the 2015 figure. Meanwhile, the combined GDP growth of our countries has outpaced the global average for the second year in a row. Our Union continues to strengthen its international reputation and is becoming an increasingly important player in the global economic system,” Tokayev said.
He added that the further development of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) should be based on equality, mutual benefit, and pragmatism.
“Integration alone does not yield the desired results; it is the outcome of joint efforts and mutually acceptable compromises,” Tokayev said.
When asked by the moderator about the role of digital technologies in trade among EAEU countries, Tokayev underscored the growing importance of innovation:
“Modern challenges require new approaches to economic development, and digital technologies play a key role in this. Digitalization and artificial intelligence are priorities of our national policy. E-commerce, digital document management, and automated logistics systems have already become integral parts of the EAEU economies. They help reduce costs, speed up the movement of goods, and simplify business access to the common market,” he said.
Tokayev noted that digitalization underpins a major technological shift and is transforming how economies and societies function.
“At the heart of this process is artificial intelligence—a technology that not only boosts productivity but fundamentally changes how economies, governments, and societies operate. AI is already being implemented in sectors like communications, transportation, energy, manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Of course, there are downsides to AI as well. Take ChatGPT, for example. Students are using this tool—and reportedly, some political leaders also turn to ChatGPT to help them write their speeches. I think this is a side effect of AI and digitalization in general,” he added.
Tokayev cited forecasts suggesting that by 2030, digitalization and AI could add over $15 trillion to global GDP, potentially replace up to 300 million jobs, and give rise to entirely new professions.
Earlier on June 26, President Tokayev arrived in Belarus to attend the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and the Eurasian Economic Forum.
