'This story inspires millions': Tokayev awards Golovkin

Tengrinews.kz – Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received the President of World Boxing, Gennady Golovkin, according to Akorda.

The President congratulated Gennady Golovkin on his election as President of the international federation World Boxing, calling this decision a recognition of the renowned athlete’s contribution to the development of global boxing, his professionalism, and impeccable reputation.

“You have indeed made an enormous contribution to the development of world sports, honorably represented the Kazakh school of boxing with its rich traditions, and, of course, helped strengthen Kazakhstan’s status as a boxing powerhouse. Your path has been marked by numerous brilliant victories. It is a story of strength of spirit, resilience, and discipline that inspires millions of young people not only in Kazakhstan but far beyond our country. Without any doubt, your name is inscribed in the history of world boxing,” the President said.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highly praised the athlete’s work as President of the National Olympic Committee.

“Your management achievements deserve special recognition. In acknowledgment of your sporting merits, I proposed your candidacy for the position of President of the National Olympic Committee. We are grateful for the significant work you carried out in a short period of time, working with national sports federations across all disciplines. You managed to establish effective cooperation with the International Olympic Committee,” Tokayev noted.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that Gennady Golovkin now faces major tasks as the head of World Boxing.

“A new stage in your career has begun. You have been elected President of World Boxing — a new international boxing federation. The work is only beginning; there is much to be done. It is worth noting that, for the first time, a representative of Kazakhstan is leading a global sports organization. I am confident that your professional vision will elevate the organization to a new level and open new horizons for the development of boxing,” the President stressed.

He awarded Gennady Golovkin the Order of “Barys” First Class for his outstanding services to national sports.

Gennady Golovkin thanked the President for the high recognition, trust, and support. He noted that he would continue to make every effort to further develop boxing and strengthen its position both in Kazakhstan and internationally.

Gennady Golovkin elected president of World Boxing

As a reminder, on November 23, the legendary Kazakh boxer Gennady Golovkin was elected President of the international federation World Boxing. He was the only candidate allowed to run. All candidates underwent verification by an independent commission consisting of three independent experts.

The process was also supervised by the international organization Sport Resolutions, which handles sports arbitration. Since Golovkin was the sole candidate, his approval, according to the World Boxing charter, was unanimously confirmed by the Congress without a vote.

World Boxing is an international sports organization established in 2023 after the International Olympic Committee revoked recognition of the IBA (formerly AIBA) due to multiple issues, including lack of financial transparency and corruption.

Gennady Golovkin replaced Dutch sports official Boris van der Vorst as President of World Boxing.
