Tengrinews.kz - Universities should become pioneers in research and innovation, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during a public address, according to a statement from Akorda.
The Head of State noted that while educational institutions focus primarily on training specialists, scientific research should also be a key priority. He emphasized that education and science must go hand in hand.
"Kazakhstan currently has ten institutions designated as research universities. However, this is not enough for the full development of science. Efforts in this area must be significantly strengthened. Science must bring tangible benefits to the country.
Of course, we already have some achievements. Over the past five years, scientific organizations engaged in applied research have generated over 40 billion tenge in revenue. More than 10 billion tenge has been paid in taxes, and this figure is expected to grow.
Private investment in science has reached 14.5 billion tenge, and more than 2,000 new jobs have been created. Our scientists are actively contributing to the country’s economic development," the President said.
Tokayev highlighted that universities have begun to build strong ties with industry. One example, he said, is Satbayev University, where scientists developed an innovative technology to produce ultra-pure selenium. As a result, the price of selenium per kilogram increased 15-fold, generating an additional 1.2 billion tenge in profit for the processing company.
The President also praised the work of young academician Durvudkhan Suragan, whose research in mathematical physics has been successfully applied in cryptography and data protection systems. Tokayev noted that in today’s digital era, such achievements are a clear sign of the strong potential of Kazakhstan’s scientific community.
He called on domestic enterprises to contribute more actively to the development of science, stressing the importance of cooperation between businesses, universities, and research centers to create new products. He also noted that it is a strategically important step that major industrial companies in Kazakhstan are now allocating one percent of their revenues to science.
Earlier, President Tokayev signed a decree on awarding scientists for outstanding achievements in the field of science and technology.
