Tengrinews.kz – The Save the Caspian Sea petition has gathered over 50,000 signatures, according to a statement by the organization.

Activists from the global movement Save the Caspian Sea said that the petition, launched at the start of the Caspian High Week, is rapidly gaining support.

The petition is addressed to the governments of the five Caspian littoral states and to companies engaged in resource extraction and transportation in the region.

“As its authors, we demand collective and urgent measures: ensure full transparency of environmental information, organize international satellite monitoring, establish unified rules for the use of water resources, and initiate coordinated actions to restore the Caspian’s natural environment.”

The link to the Save the Caspian Sea project has been shared with the movement’s international partners, who actively helped spread it. Thanks to this network, SOS Caspian has received strong responses from around the world, especially from countries facing similar impacts of the oil industry — including Mexico, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, China, and others.

Despite rising public awareness and recognition of the problem at the state level, major oil corporations and government agencies in the Caspian states still largely remain on the sidelines.

“The environmental consequences of falling sea levels, pollution, and ecosystem destruction are visible to every resident of the Caspian region. Yet large oil companies continue to act as if these challenges don’t exist. We stress: a sustainable future for the Caspian is impossible without the involvement of the corporations that have profited from its resources for decades,” activists said.

The movement earlier presented its “10 Steps to Save the Caspian Sea” — a strategic plan to unite governments and businesses of the Caspian states. It calls for the creation of an open satellite monitoring system, promotion of green investments, and international coordination. Environmentalists warn that without urgent action, the Caspian risks repeating the fate of the Aral Sea.

Activists expressed solidarity with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit assessed the catastrophic state of the Caspian Sea and stressed the need for collective action. He outlined two key initiatives: the creation of a Water Issues Analysis Center under the SCO and the hosting of an environmental summit in Astana in 2026.

In his recent State of the Nation Address, Tokayev again voiced deep concern about the declining Caspian water level. Activists note that these initiatives fully align with the core goals of the Save the Caspian Sea movement.

“Today’s Address by the President of Kazakhstan is an important political signal. It marks the start of new opportunities to save and restore the Caspian Sea. The Save the Caspian Sea movement is ready to play an active role in this work,” said Vadim Ni, founder of the movement.

The global movement Save the Caspian Sea works to protect the unique ecosystem of the Caspian, demanding corporate accountability, transparency, and environmental responsibility. It collaborates with environmental organizations, local communities, governments, and industries to tackle urgent ecological problems such as pollution and habitat loss.
