According to Nurlan Abdirov, the head of the commission, the voting results are as follows: 5,561,937 citizens voted in favor, accounting for 71.12% of the votes, while 2,045,271 citizens voted against (the percentage of those who voted against was not disclosed).
The final turnout for the referendum was 7,820,204 individuals, representing 63.66% of eligible voters.
The number of invalid ballots totaled 130,267. Among these, 82,729 ballots were considered valid but not counted due to voters selecting both options.
The decision made in the referendum takes effect from the date of the official announcement of the results. It is mandatory across Kazakhstan and does not require further validation through acts.
"Thus, the citizens of Kazakhstan have made a positive decision on the important issue of constructing a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan during the republican referendum held on October 6, 2024," Abdirov stated.
On October 7, preliminary results of the referendum were announced, indicating that 71.12% voted in favor, with 2,452,071 votes against.
The referendum took place on Sunday, October 6, from 07:00 to 20:00. The preliminary turnout was reported at 63.87% by 20:00, with a total of 7,820,918 votes cast.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that no violations occurred during the referendum. Citizens were asked the question: "Do you agree with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan?" with two response options: "Yes, I agree" and "No, I do not agree."
