Proposal to ban gender reassignment in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz – Deputy Magerram Magerramov sent a parliamentary inquiry to the government demanding that gender reassignment surgeries be suspended until changes are made to the legislation.

In his address to Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin, Magerramov spoke about the need to preserve traditional family values. He emphasized that the head of state had previously repeatedly stated that it was unacceptable to promote ideas that were "alien to Kazakhstani culture."

"Considering the rich history of our country, its identity preserved by our ancestors, the cultural and traditional values that we inherited, the question arises about the acceptability of changing the gender of persons with gender identity disorders
According to the code ‘On public health and the healthcare system,’ persons with gender identity disorders who have reached the age of 21, are capable, except for persons with mental and behavioral disorders, have the right to change their gender," Magerramov said.

The deputy sent a number of questions to the government regarding gender reassignment in Kazakhstan:

How many gender reassignment surgeries have been performed in the country?
How many people have applied to change their gender?
Have there been cases of returning to the original gender after surgery?
Why is a behavioral or mental disorder treated surgically?
Do such interventions comply with the medical principle of "Do no harm"?

"The People's Party of Kazakhstan (PPK) faction demands that this manipulation be banned before the legislation is changed to allow gender reassignment," the Mazhilis deputy summed up.
