Tengrinews.kz - President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the importance of ensuring access to clean drinking water during his address marking Water Management Workers’ Day, citing Akorda.
He noted that tangible progress has been made in the sector in recent years.
“Today, most residents of both urban and rural areas have access to clean drinking water. One of our key priorities is bringing water supply to around 500 more villages. The issue of water purification is especially critical. As the saying goes, ‘Even water comes with responsibility’ (‘Судың да сұрауы бар’). People have always understood the value of every drop. Rational water use remains an urgent issue. The novella ‘Shyngyrau’ (‘The Well’) by the renowned writer Abish Kekilbayev beautifully illustrates both the priceless nature of water and the hard work of well diggers,” said Tokayev.
He also reminded the public that Kazakhstan has introduced a tiered water tariff to encourage more efficient consumption.
“In other words: the less you use, the less you pay. The government also actively supports farms that implement water-saving technologies—covering up to 80 percent of related costs. These technologies are already being used on 470,000 hectares of land. This work will continue, because water conservation is a vital strategic task,” he said.
Tokayev stressed the importance of adopting digital solutions in the sector, though he acknowledged the current situation is still far from ideal.
He pointed to the national “Taza Kazakhstan” campaign, which promotes a culture of water conservation. Over two million students have participated in the large-scale initiative “Save Water – Secure the Future!”
“Our younger generation must learn to treat water with care from an early age,” the president concluded.
Earlier, President Tokayev congratulated water management professionals on their professional holiday and emphasized that water is a source of life and a priceless strategic resource for all nations.
