Tengrinews.kz – Starting Monday, September 15, a number of organizations in the capital began operating under a new schedule.
Today, some government employees, utility workers, and employees of quasi-state organizations in Astana woke up earlier than usual. The previously announced updated work schedule has officially come into effect.
From now on, utility services and the city administration (akimat) begin their workday at 7:30 AM. Some government bodies and companies start a bit later, but still earlier than before — between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. Accordingly, their workday will end earlier as well. At the same time, schools, hospitals, and Public Service Centers (TsONs) will continue operating on their usual schedule.
The main goal is simple: to reduce traffic during rush hours and make morning and evening commutes faster and less stressful for residents. According to estimates, traffic on city roads could drop by 15–20 percent. Experts note that if this measure proves effective, it will benefit not only the transportation system but also the city's ecology.
In addition, Astana will tighten control over parking violations. Vehicles parked illegally or blocking traffic will be towed to impound lots.
How the capital transitioned to the new schedule
Talks about adjusting work hours in Astana began back in March 2025. In June, Akim (Mayor) Zhenis Kassymbek stated that an earlier start time for government agencies and public utilities was under consideration. The initiative received support in the Mazhilis (lower house of Parliament): MP Asylbek Nuralin proposed shifting the working hours of central government bodies and national companies.
"Morning hours are more productive, and starting work at 7:00 or 8:00 AM would help ease traffic congestion," the MP said.
On August 31, the Astana city administration officially announced the change in the work schedule. As stated earlier, city officials expect that shifting start times to earlier hours will help distribute traffic flow more evenly and reduce the burden on major roads.
