Tengrinews.kz – Mobile numbers in Kazakhstan may soon be available for purchase through the eGov website. The corresponding amendments have been proposed by the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations, and Aerospace Industry.
According to Olzhas Kabenov, Deputy Chairman of the Telecommunications Committee under the ministry, mobile operators currently submit applications to the agency and receive a pool of numbers, which Kazakh citizens can then acquire.
The ministry has proposed changes to the legislation — these are outlined in a draft law concerning the development of the telecommunications market and data processing centers.
“In the draft law, we propose that number distribution be possible not only through the operator networks, but also via eGov,” said Olzhas Kabenov during a public discussion of the document.
As a result, Kazakh citizens may eventually be able to choose or obtain mobile numbers online from home. However, it's too early to confirm — this is only a draft bill, currently under discussion. It remains unclear whether the measure will be adopted or when it might come into force.
In the near future, only official telecom operators will be allowed to sell SIM cards in Kazakhstan. The digital ministry has drafted relevant amendments. The authors believe this move will help prevent fraud and scams against citizens.
As a result, mobile phone stores, gadget retailers, supermarkets, and convenience stores will no longer be allowed to sell SIM cards. Entrepreneurs who continue selling SIMs outside of telecom operator offices will face fines.
