Tengrinews.kz – Kazhydromet has issued a warning for residents of Astana, Almaty, and other cities.
“On August 20, 2025, unfavorable meteorological conditions are expected in the cities of Zhezkazgan, Karaganda, Balkhash, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Almaty, and at night in the city of Astana,” the statement said.
Unfavorable meteorological conditions are a combination of short-term weather factors (calm, light wind, fog, inversion) that contribute to the accumulation of harmful (polluting) substances in the ground-level layer of the atmosphere.
An inversion is a weather phenomenon in which warm air lies above cold air, essentially covering it. Normally, air near the ground is warmer and rises upward, carrying pollutants away. But during an inversion, cold air gets “trapped” below, along with exhaust, dust, and smoke. As a result, pollution accumulates at the surface, especially in cities.
