Tengrinews.kz - This year, a record volume of water has been collected in the reservoirs of the republic - more than 75 billion cubic meters, of which more than 12 billion cubic meters are flood water.
According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the correct distribution of flood water allowed not only to fill the reservoirs but also to direct water to rivers and lakes that have faced drying up in recent years, estuaries, natural pastures, and other objects.
"Thus, since the beginning of the year, 15.4 billion cubic meters of water have entered Lake Balkhash, which is 4 billion cubic meters more than the year before. Of these, 3.3 billion cubic meters entered during the flood. Since the beginning of the year, 17 billion cubic meters of water have entered the Caspian Sea," the department's press release says.
The Ministry of Water Resources recalled that for the first time in 10 years, the Kapchagay Reservoir in the Almaty region was filled to 100%, collecting more than 18 billion cubic meters of water.
It is also noted that during the flood, 80 million cubic meters of water were sent to the Kamys-Samara lakes of the West Kazakhstan region. 839 million cubic meters of water were redistributed from the Ulytau region to the Kyzylorda region. As a result, for the first time in the history of observations, this water reached the lake systems of the Kyzylorda region through the Sarysu River.
"In the south of the country, thanks to water diplomacy, clear distribution of water, and the introduction of water-saving technologies, it was also possible to improve the water balance," the press service emphasized.
For example, about 2.5 billion cubic meters of water entered the Northern Aral Sea this year, which is more than 400 million cubic meters more than in 2023. At the same time, the use of water-saving technologies allowed farmers in the Kyzylorda region to save 200 million cubic meters of water, which were also sent to the Northern Aral.
In total, more than 4.7 billion cubic meters of water have entered the lake systems of the Kyzylorda region since the beginning of the year. For comparison, last year this figure was about 4.3 billion cubic meters.
It should be noted that Kazakhstan's reservoirs can hold 89 billion cubic meters of water.
Earlier, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev delivered a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the One Water Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. During his speech, he advocated for technological innovation and regulatory measures, emphasizing the significance of strengthening water reservoirs, preserving glaciers, and introducing advanced irrigation systems.
