Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan is set to cultivate exotic fruits such as mangoes and avocados in local greenhouses, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Last June, the first phase of an industrial greenhouse project was launched in the Sairam District of the Turkestan region, covering an area of five hectares. The facility, built by a private company, is currently the only greenhouse in Kazakhstan producing bananas on an industrial scale.
The greenhouse features durable structures equipped with climate control and an adaptive feeding system.
"The production capacity is 1,000 tons per year. The first phase was fully funded by private investments. Currently, the company is working on design and cost estimates for the second phase, which will span six hectares and be financed through an agricultural credit corporation. Planned crops include tomatoes (five hectares) and strawberries (one hectare), with production capacities of 3,000 tons and 120 tons, respectively," the ministry stated in response to an official Tengrinews.kz inquiry.
Additionally, the first greenhouse is expected to expand by another five hectares, increasing banana production to 2,000 tons annually.
"With the support of the Turkestan region akimat (local government administration), efforts to develop tropical crop cultivation are actively underway. A 90-hectare project is in the planning stages, where crops such as bananas, mangoes, and avocados will be grown," the ministry added.
