Kazakhstan plans to complete negotiations on accession into the WTO before the end of 2012, Novosti Kazakhstan quoted Kazakhstan’s Minister for Economic Integration Ms. Zhanar Aitzhanova as saying June 15. “We hope to complete the talks before the end of 2012”, Ms. Aitzhanova said at a plenary sitting of the country’s Majilis (lower chamber). “We are acting as sovereign states – Kazakhstan and Russian Federation. Given the Customs Union, however, we are trying to harmonize accession when it comes to customs policy”, the Minister said. Early this year the Government stated that accelerated accession into the WTO would be one of the priorities for 2011. In June 2009 heads of governments of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus announced that they would be trying to access the organization as a single entity. However, in October 2009 the sides announced they would be pursuing accession separately, relying on concerted principles.
