July 22-23 Astana hosted an international conference on counteracting terrorism attended by visitors from Russia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Israel. These were mostly officers of intelligence services, law enforcement bodies and prosecutors’ offices. Ms. Valeria Porokhova, a well-known translator of the Quran into Russian, shared of her vision of Islam. An Associate U.N. Member and Academician of St. Peterburg Academy of Humanitarian Sciences, she called the media to get rid of such terms as “Islamic terrorism” and “Islamic extremism”. According to her, the word “Islam” was derived from the root word “salam”. From this root word, you can also derive the words peace and safety. “The global media should eliminate this philological abracadabra through raising public awareness [of the genuine Islam]”, she stated. “And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned”, she quoted the Quran, saying that Islam's view of Jews and Christians, who are named "the People of the Book" in the Quran, is very friendly and tolerant. “It is important to bear that in mind today”, she emphasized. “We should reveal the true motives of terror, reveal and stop the people promoting these motives and practicing them. (…) Any entity promoting the idea of terror needs an audience. It is of paramount importance to deprive such entities of their potential audience through educational efforts. People should get to know the true Quran, rather than interpretations”, she believes. Ms. Porokhova sees no threat of extremism in Kazakhstan. According to her, people of Kazakhstan are peaceful. “However, a powerful, sensible structure should be put in place to proclaim pure Islam based on the Quran, Islam free of alien traditions”, she said. “The first word sent by the Almighty is the imperative “read””, she said.
