Kazakhstan could play a significant role in the world through developing its agribusiness: EBRD President Thomas Mirow

When speaking at the opening of the Investment Forum in Astana within the EBRD annual meeting, EBRD President Thomas Mirow stated that Kazakhstan could play a significant role in the world through developing its agribusiness, Tengrinews.kz reports. “The world is growing worried over rising prices for foodstuffs. There is a prospect that the Earth will have to sustain over 9 billion people by the end of the century (…) Kazakhstan could play a significant role [in ensuring food security] if the nation develops its agribusiness”, Mirow said. He also emphasized that Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan are regarded as countries whose agriculture potential is yet has to be unleashed. Astana will be hosting EBRD annual meeting May 20-21. The Annual Meeting brings together the EBRD’s Board of Governors, namely the government ministers and other senior officials who represent the Bank’s shareholder countries and organisations. The Governors review the EBRD’s activities to support recovery in the region and give strategic guidance on the Bank’s operations in the period ahead. The Board of Governors sessions will be staged alongside the established Business Forum programme, launched this year under the theme “Supporting Markets – Asia Meets Europe”. 2011 EBRD Annual Meeting and Business Forum
