Tengrinews.kz - The recent heavy snowfall, which lasted for several days, led to significant traffic jams on the roads of Astana, changing the usual rhythm of traffic, according to Sergek group.
Comparison of the traffic situation before and after the snowfall
Analysts conducted a study comparing the average speed on the roads on November 5, when there was no snow yet, and on November 11, when the city was under a thick snow cover.
Traditionally, the busiest highways were Turan Avenue, Kabanbay Batyr Avenue, Mangilik El Avenue, and Turkestan Street.
During rush hours, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., traffic density reached its maximum. Snow drifts increased the duration of traffic jams in some areas by an hour.
Speed on main roads
On Turan Avenue in the morning hours of November 11, especially in the northern direction, the speed of traffic decreased by a quarter. On other busy sections, such as Mangilik El, Kabanbay Batyr, and Turkestan Street avenues, the decrease was about a third.
On Mangilik El Avenue, the peak of traffic jams occurred at 10 a.m., when the average speed dropped from 27 to 16 kilometers per hour. In the evening, the most difficult situation was observed on Kabanbay Batyr Avenue: between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., the speed dropped from 23 kilometers per hour in clear weather to only 12 kilometers per hour on a snowy day.
As a result of the snowfalls, the average speed in the city decreased by 30%, and travel time for drivers increased by 43%.
