How Kazakhstani schoolchildren will study on January 23

Heavy snowfall, blizzards, and extreme cold have prompted schools in affected areas to temporarily switch to online learning.
Astana
Due to worsening weather conditions, students from grades 0–11 (12) and first- and second-year college students (based on 9th-grade entry) in the first shift will transition to remote learning on January 23.
East Kazakhstan Region
Adverse weather has led to the first shift of students moving online. Freezing rain and winds of up to 20 m/s are expected in Ust-Kamenogorsk on January 23. In the regional capital, both first- and second-shift students from grades 0–11 will attend classes remotely.
The East Kazakhstan Emergency Department previously warned residents to avoid leaving towns due to hazardous conditions.
North Kazakhstan Region
With temperatures dropping to -28°C, classes for first-shift students (grades 0–9) in Petropavlovsk and all districts of the region will be held online on January 23.
Karaganda
In Karaganda, due to adverse weather, classes for first- and second-shift students will transition to remote learning on January 23.
Aktobe
In Aktobe, worsening weather conditions mean that students from grades 1–11 in the first shift will attend classes remotely on January 23. Online learning will also apply to first-shift students in grades 1–9 in Alga and Khromtau districts. In other districts, remote learning will be implemented for primary school students in the first shift.
Abai Region
On January 23, 2025, in the Abai Region, adverse weather conditions will result in the following first-shift classes transitioning to remote learning:
- Borodulikha District: Grades 1–4 in 11 schools
- Kokpekti District: Grades 1–11 in 3 schools; grades 1–4 in 1 school
- Ayagoz District: Grades 1–11 in all schools
- Beskargai District: Grades 1–4 in 5 schools
- Zhanasemey District: Grades 1–11 in 4 schools
- Kurchatov City: Grades 1–9 in all schools
All other schools in the region will operate as usual.
