Heavy snowfall in Almaty: Emergency warning from Department of Emergency Situations

Tengrinews.kz - A heavy snowfall is expected in Almaty. The Department of Emergency Situations has issued a warning to residents and car owners.

Based on the weather alert from meteorologists, the Almaty Emergency Situations Department informs that on January 22, in the morning and afternoon, the city is expected to experience heavy snow, fog, and icy conditions.

"The Almaty Emergency Situations Department urges car owners and pedestrians to be extremely cautious and attentive on the roads due to icy conditions! Also, based on the storm warning regarding precipitation, we recommend that car owners avoid parking under trees, power lines, and other overhead structures," the statement reads.

To reduce the risk of falling, the following safety measures should be observed during icy conditions:

• Remember that vehicle control is severely impaired during snowstorms and icy roads, which can lead to the driver losing control of the vehicle and, as a result, hitting pedestrians.
• Cross streets only at designated pedestrian crossings.
• Be attentive, especially when crossing the road, and avoid distractions (such as using a mobile phone).
• Always watch where you are walking.
• Pay attention to the proper choice of footwear. Shoes should have flat soles made of non-slip materials with a textured pattern.
• Do not keep your hands in your pockets, as this will help you maintain balance on the ice.
• Remember that sidewalks, bus stops, steps when entering stores, and even your own porch are places where people are most likely to fall.

As a reminder, it was previously reported that from January 22, a snowfall is expected in Almaty for two days, at times heavy. Icy conditions are anticipated, and the temperature will drop:

• On January 22, at night from -7 to -9 degrees, during the day from 0 to -2 degrees.
• On January 23, at night from -15 to -17 degrees, during the day from -5 to -7 degrees.
