Tengrinews.kz — The government of Kazakhstan has allocated 3 billion tenge for the construction of a protective dam on Lake Alakol in Zhetysu Region. The relevant resolution was signed by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
The funds have been allocated from the government reserve as part of the implementation of the President’s instructions on developing water management infrastructure.
What will be built
The allocated funds will be used to build a 6-kilometer protective dam. Of this, 2.5 kilometers will run near the village of Koktuma, and another 3.5 kilometers near the village of Akshi.
According to the government, the structure will help reinforce the lake’s shoreline and improve the system for transporting and redistributing sediment, which will protect the coast from further erosion.
What has already been done
Work to strengthen the shore of Alakol has been ongoing for several years. In 2025, earthworks and concrete works were already completed on a 1.7-kilometer section, and gabion structures were installed to reinforce the shoreline.
The new stage of the project will allow work on creating protective infrastructure to continue.
It is noted that construction of the dam will not only help preserve the shoreline, but also create conditions for further development of the region’s tourism potential.
