Tengrinews.kz — A suspect in crimes committed during the January 2022 events has been extradited to Kazakhstan from Georgia, citing the General Prosecutor’s Office.
It is reported that, with the assistance of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, employees of the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Interpol National Central Bureau extradited a Russian citizen from Georgia.
“He is suspected of having taken an active part in mass riots in Almaty in January 2022, as well as in the abduction of citizens and the violent seizure of their property. The suspect had been hiding from justice for more than three years and was on an international wanted list,” the statement says.
The suspect was detained in Georgia in September. He has now been placed in a pre-trial detention facility.
The alleged crimes carry a penalty of 7 to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Earlier, a Ukrainian citizen was extradited to Kazakhstan from Poland. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the woman is suspected of participating in a transnational organized criminal group in 2017–2018 that was engaged in the illegal purchase and sale of human organs.
