Tengrinews.kz – The replacement of old banknotes with new ones continues in Kazakhstan. The National Bank of Kazakhstan has announced the timeline for when the old 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 tenge notes will be phased out from parallel circulation.
The National Bank reminded that new-format banknotes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, and 10,000 tenge are already in circulation. The following deadlines for the end of parallel circulation of the old notes have been set:
- 2,000 tenge notes – until June 24, 2026;
- 10,000 tenge notes – until June 27, 2026;
- 1,000 tenge notes – until March 27, 2027.
Parallel (or simultaneous) circulation of old and new banknotes is a standard practice used by central banks when introducing updated banknote designs or new denominations.
It refers to a period during which both the old and new versions of banknotes have equal legal tender status and can be used for payments, transactions, and transfers without restrictions.
Parallel circulation ensures a smooth transition, prevents public panic, allows time for adaptation (such as updating ATMs and cash registers), and avoids economic disruption.
Old banknotes are not withdrawn abruptly but are instead phased out gradually — through wear, damage, or return to banks — until their share in circulation drops to a minimum.
Additionally, the National Bank reminded that parallel circulation of 5,000 tenge notes of the 2011 series will end on September 24, 2025.
