Tengrinews.kz — The Almaty Zoo has welcomed three raccoon kits born to parents Archie and Bella. This marks the first raccoon offspring at the zoo in nearly 20 years.

First offspring in nearly 20 years

The kits were born on April 27. According to the press service, their mother kept them hidden in their shelter and cared for them personally during the first few months. Now that they have grown stronger, they have begun venturing out into the main enclosure to explore their surroundings.

The sex of the kits has not yet been determined, so they will be named at a later date.

What the kits eat

Gaukhar Sergibayeva, head of the Carnivorous Mammals Department, noted that raccoons weigh only 60–70 grams at birth and are entirely dependent on their mother.

"They are born blind and deaf, relying completely on their mother. In their first weeks of life, their diet consists exclusively of breast milk. As they grow, they gradually transition to adult food. They are now already trying meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, and oatmeal—everything their parents eat," she said.
