Tengrinews.kz – Residents of Astana and Kostanay were surprised to wake up to the season’s first snowfall on September 29, with many sharing photos and videos online. While some joked about feeling the New Year’s atmosphere in September, others noted less festive side effects — like higher taxi prices.
Astana
Early in the morning, snowflakes replaced the usual autumn scenery outside people’s windows. Social media users posted pictures, with many commenting that snow in September was not what they expected at the start of fall.
Others pointed out that the sudden change in weather coincided with a spike in taxi fares.
Kostanay
In Kostanay, the snow turned streets and cars white for several hours, making it look more like December than late September. Readers also sent photos to Tengrinews, showing a city covered in a fresh layer of snow.
Local police reported difficult driving conditions. Between 6:00 and 10:00 a.m., patrol officers pulled nine cars out of roadside ditches on the KAZ-03 Kostanay–Almaty–Yekaterinburg highway. In the regional center, 12 minor accidents were registered, and 10 reports of trees falling onto vehicles were received.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Authorities urged drivers to reduce speed, keep safe distances and avoid sudden maneuvers.
Weather service confirmation
Kazhydromet confirmed that rain mixed with snow fell overnight in Kostanay and Akmola regions.
Still, many users online suggested enjoying the moment. Some welcomed the arrival of the first snow as a reminder of winter’s magic, while others joked that it means only 93 days remain until the New Year.
