At a briefing, an FBI spokesperson stated that the suspect is believed to be "college-aged," which typically means between 18 and 24 years old in the U.S. The suspect is male.
Robert Bowles, head of the FBI field office in Salt Lake City, said the attack on Kirk was premeditated.
"I can say that this was a targeted attack. We do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community," he said at a press conference.
A rifle was found in a wooded area where the suspect reportedly fled; it is being sent for forensic analysis. Police also have video footage of the suspect, and his identity is being established, according to a representative of the Utah Department of Public Safety.
"We were able to track his movements as he exited on the far side of the building, jumped from the roof, and fled the campus into a residential area. We have high-quality video of the individual but will not release it yet, as we’re using technology to identify him," the official said.
The 31-year-old activist and supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump was shot on Wednesday during a public event at Utah Valley University. The gunman opened fire as Kirk was responding to a question about transgender individuals involved in school shootings. He was shot in the neck. Initial reports said he survived but was in critical condition. His death was later confirmed by Donald Trump.
Charlie Kirk was known for holding “open mic” debates on U.S. college campuses, where he frequently promoted conservative values and debated Democratic supporters.
In his public statements, Kirk criticized the Ukrainian government, opposed U.S. military aid to Ukraine, and called for restoring diplomatic ties with Russia. He was also a vocal proponent of Donald Trump’s “America First” policy.
