What is important to know?
As QazTech analyst Alexandr Dauranov notes, e-commerce helps businesses find new customers, enter large markets and expand sales. It creates jobs, brings income to the budget and makes business more transparent, which simplifies access to financing.
E-commerce in numbers:
- In 2023, the volume of e-commerce reached 2.4 trillion tenge.
- More than 300 thousand jobs were created.
- Taxes from the sector amounted to 360 billion tenge.
- E-commerce already covers 13% of retail turnover and doubles every two years.
What do they propose to change?
At the round table, QazTech presented the results of the analysis of e-commerce and joint work with business and the government.
The main idea is to level the playing field for all market participants. Foreign online stores must comply with the same rules as Kazakhstani companies: pay taxes, follow quality standards and protect consumer rights. This will create fair competition and strengthen the position of domestic businesses.
"We have studied the problem in depth, developed specific proposals and are glad that the Ministry of Trade supported them. Joint work of the state and business is the key to the successful development of the sector," Dauranov emphasized.
What's the problem?
According to QazTech, foreign online stores occupy about 20% of the Kazakhstani e-commerce market, but do not pay taxes and customs duties. This makes their goods 25-30% cheaper and puts Kazakhstani entrepreneurs in unequal conditions, which can lead to job cuts and a decrease in budget revenues.
According to the alliance's calculations, if the current imbalances persist, in 2025 the economy will lose up to 21 thousand jobs, 41 billion tenge in taxes and 617 billion tenge in added value.
The potential and future of Kazakhstani e-commerce
Kazakhstani companies operating in the online segment show impressive results. According to QazTech, their sales have increased by 4.9 times in 1.5 years. In addition, such companies create more stable jobs, pay more taxes (5.6% of turnover versus 1.9% for offline businesses).
"E-commerce in Kazakhstan is a sector with huge potential. It can become a growth point for the economy if we create equal conditions for all market participants," Alexandr Dauranov summarized.
QazTech notes that e-commerce can become a powerful tool that will increase employment, raise budget revenues and improve the quality of life of Kazakhstanis.
Earlier, Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has tasked the government with developing measures to modernize and digitalize trade in the country, including markets and local stores. He made this statement at a government meeting.
