Tengrinews.kz - The BRICS summit will take place in Kazan on October 23-24. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been invited to this forum as a guest. Kazakhstani political analyst, Gaziz Abishev explained why Kazakhstan does not plan to join the organization.
The summit will include both leaders of member states and heads of candidate countries and observer states.
Gaziz Abishev notes that in the near future, Kazakhstan, as a partner of BRICS, is unlikely to join the organization. Firstly, in the expert's opinion, there is no urgent need for this.
"Kazakhstan has close ties with Russia, reinforced by strategic relations, and is a member of the CIS, CSTO, and EAEU. Kazakhstan also has very close relations with China, both in the economic sphere (the Belt and Road Initiative) and in defense and security. Together with other BRICS members - Russia, China, India, and Iran - Kazakhstan forms the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, whose summit took place this year in Astana," Gaziz Abishev wrote in his Telegram channel.
In other words, Kazakhstan does not experience a lack of cooperation with the main players of BRICS, emphasizes Abishev. Whatever decisions and initiatives are made within the framework of BRICS will inevitably be conveyed to other platforms and in bilateral relations.
“BRICS is positioned as a counterweight to the collective West and is used as an argument in the confrontational rhetoric of the Eastern bloc. Kazakhstan's accession could raise questions about its peaceful multi-vector policy, which could be converted into some diplomatic capital,” added the political analyst.
Thirdly, as Abishev notes, Kazakhstan remains committed to the UN Charter, supports the exclusive role of this organization, and promotes the idea that it should be the priority platform for addressing international issues.
“There is no hostility towards BRICS in Kazakhstan, on the contrary. However, joining this organization means either actively participating in its projects to form alternative global systems or acting as a barrier to their development. At this stage, neither option is of particular interest to Kazakhstan,” concluded Gaziz Abishev.
Earlier, Advisor and Press Secretary of the President, Berik Uali, told Tengrinews.kz that proposals for Kazakhstan to join BRICS had been made to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Note: BRICS is an association of nine countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia. The organization was founded in June 2006.
