Tengrinews.kz - Ekibastuz has been removed from Kazakhstan’s list of single-industry towns, according to the Ministry of National Economy.
Why Ekibastuz was removed from the list
The Ministry of National Economy carried out a comprehensive analysis of the development of single-industry towns using 78 indicators. The assessment covered industry, investment, entrepreneurship, employment, and economic sustainability.
Based on the results of the study, it was found that Ekibastuz has shown a steady decline in dependence on a single city-forming enterprise. The city’s economy has become more balanced, and its sectoral structure more diversified.
Growth in industrial output and high investment activity were also noted. This allowed the city to move beyond the single-industry development model.
Updated list of single-industry towns
Taking these changes into account, 19 single-industry towns remain in Kazakhstan. The list includes Abai, Aksai, Aksu, Altai, Balkhash, Zhanaozen, Zhitikara, Lisakovsk, Karazhal, Kentau, Kulsary, Kurchatov, Ridder, Rudny, Satpayev, Stepnogorsk, Temirtau, Shakhtinsk, and Khromtau.
Thus, the number of single-industry towns has decreased from 20 to 19.
